How to Choose the Right Neighborhood
You’re planning to move and part of that plan is selecting the right neighborhood. Although the type of home you choose is very important, your chosen neighborhood matters too as it will have a big impact on livability, affordability, and your way of life. Here’s what should be kept in mind when searching for the right neighborhood.
1. Low crime rate. Live in any neighborhood beset by crime and your life will soon become miserable. Not only must you worry about your home, but what happens to your neighbors will effect you too. Bars on the window, nonfunctioning street lights, broken glass on pavement, and abandoned cars are signs of blight. Steer clear of any neighborhood that doesn’t meet, even exceed your expectations.
2. Excellent schools. What do excellent schools have to do with the homeowner whose children are grown or has no plans of having children in the first place? Much, actually. You want the best schools for your children and for the other children too. Children are our future and our hope. A side benefit of excellent schools is home values — they stay up if the schools are the best they can be.
3. Proximity to shopping. You live at home, but much of what you do is outside of the home. Chances are you make visits to grocery stores and other retailers several times per week. The closer the stores and the more varied they are, the better for your neighborhood. Bonus is any neighborhood that connects to retailers and can be reached on foot.
4. Access to outdoor activities. Proximity to shopping is certainly important. Other pluses for a right neighborhood include nearby parks with children’s play areas, tennis and basketball courts, walking and cycling trails, and other features. Pools, a golf course, a neighborhood swim club, and nature trails are other things that make any area a nice place to live.
5. Proximity to medical care. How far is the nearest hospital or clinic? You might not consider this point all that much if you are young or in relatively good health, but when you need emergency help, knowing where you can get it is significantly important. Medical care more than 20 minutes out can be a big problem. Then again, if your area is served by a top notch EMS service, your chances of survival may be pretty good.
6. Availability of public transportation. You may have a car and get around just fine, but for some people reliance on public transportation is important. After all, if you don’t drive or simply don’t want to take your car into the city, getting there by bus, train or subway may be the best option for you. Find out what transportation options are available before you choose your neighborhood.
7. Getting there on foot. The best neighborhoods have tree-lined streets and sidewalks. Barring that, they should still be easy to access. Certainly, you should be able to move around your neighborhood with ease. Bonus is any neighborhood with sufficient green spaces, including connecting paths and trails. At the very least a good neighborhood is one that is both pedestrian and bicycle friendly.
8. Family friendly. Excellent schools is one thing. Parks, entertainment, shopping and other amenities are other matters important for making a neighborhood you admire. If you have children, you want to live where youngsters are not just accepted, but cherished. If your neighborhood is filled with childless couples or busy working couples, how will your family fit in?
