Things to Consider when You Need High-Temp Insulation

Many pieces of commercial and industrial equipment need some sort of insulation on many of the components. The insulation is typically there to impede the transfer of heat from one surface to another. Sometimes the heat is necessary because it is required to process the material properly. At other times, heat is simply a byproduct of another activity.

Regardless of the reason for heat generation, you want to keep the heat where it belongs and out of areas in which it does not belong. This is where insulation comes into the picture. The type of insulation that is necessary in these instances is entirely different from the insulation that is placed in your home to conserve energy and increase comfort levels. The heat source that is being insulated in an industrial setting is typically much hotter than anything you would find in a home. It may be something that generates heat as steam or other hot substances are transferred through pipe lines. It may be heat from an induction hardening operation during which the parts being hardening turn cherry red in the process. Regardless of the reason, when insulating equipment of this nature, you need something that not only does the job, but stands up to the environment as well.

Ceramic fiber insulation is an excellent material for highly effective containment of temperature extremes such as heat. They can be used for temperatures up to 2,300 degrees. When they are used to wrap around a surface, they are excellent at maintaining their resistance to chemical breakdown. They also resist thermal attack. If the material gets wet from water or steam, the insulating properties are maintained once the material is dried. The insulation is not ruined if it gets wet, unlike many other materials.

Insulating materials made from ceramic fiber are made by wrapping the material around a ceramic core. This gives it excellent resistance to mechanical abuse.
