Promoting safety and security in the workplace with mandatory signs and more

Safety is paramount in the workplace and particularly in hazardous areas where members of the public pass through. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps to increase safety and security that all businesses should follow. These will protect the premises and everybody onsite.

All businesses must take steps to increase safety and security in and around their premises. This is particularly true in public areas or spaces where there are a lot of people onsite, as this can be more dangerous and people must know how to react in case of any emergency, such as a fire. Promoting safety can be a challenge for businesses, but there are a few easy ways to do this that will reduce the chance of an incident occurring and inform people how to act in case of emergency. This could be the difference between life and death, so it is vital that businesses follow these steps.

Fire safety

Fires are one of the biggest threats to businesses as they can cause complete devastation. All buildings should have fire doors, extinguishers, sprinklers, alarms and exits. In addition to all of this, you should also have fire signs around the building to educate people on where to go or how to act in case of fire (more on this later).

Not only this, but you should also carry out semi-regular fire drills. This will involve sounding the fire alarms and getting everybody to quickly and safely get to the designated safe zone.

Security Equipment

You can also boost your security to protect the building, employees, visitors and equipment. This can be achieved with perimeter alarms, intruder alarms, CCTV and by employing security guards. You could also consider code activated gates and doors so that only authorised personnel can access certain areas.

By placing mandatory signs around the premises, everybody will know where to go or how to react in certain situations. These signs are designed that people can immediately take on their message subconsciously. A few examples of the type of signs that should be placed around the building include “fire door keep shut”, “Danger keep away”, “use hand sanitizer”, “hazardous area” and “fire exit keep clear”. It is particularly important to invest in these signs if you work in a potentially hazardous area with members of the public passing through, such as hospitals.

Welcome desk

You may also want to consider having a reception desk where people must check into before entering the premises. This gives you the opportunity to log who is entering and leaving the building, provide them with a pass and educate them on where they need to go. This can boost both security and safety for all and is particularly important for places like schools.

These tips should be used by all businesses to promote safety in the workplace for everybody onsite. This is important to protect the building, equipment, employees and visitors and could even save lives.
