Most of us want to advance in our career and hope to do so by building our job skills. When you increase your knowledge and performance you are often in a better position to seek more responsibility and a more authoritative position. Fortunately, there are many different ways that you can build your job skills.

Hands-On Training
There are many jobs where hands-on experience can go a long way. For example, a position in a factory where you'd have to work with machinery like a fluidizer or industrial blenders would require plenty of hands-on experience. The operation of these big complicated machines would require more than book learning. OPerating these machines would require hands-on experience to become comfortable and competent. This is an area where job experience and competence could be mastered with hands-on training.

Training Programs
Training programs allow a person to study to learn a profession. This type of training requires book learning and a test to prove mastery, more often than not. These types of programs normally provide a degree or certification after completion. These programs often have a certain amount of hours of hands-on training that are required as well. However, the bulk of the training generally is received through book learning.

Real Life Experience
Often, we actually have the experience to advance our careers but it's not formal. In these instances, we might be able to create a resume or some other proof that we have the skills. This may require references or examples of our work as proof or our competence. It may require some creativity to figure out how to package our skills and experience to showcase our skills and abilities.

We all need to showcase our job skills if we want to move ahead and advance in our careers. However, the way we choose to do this is up to us. There are a variety of different avenues that we can take to get the training we need and prove out competence. Some professions find a degree or certificate the most credible method to prove competence and skill, while others embrace the job training and real-life experience. There can be a lot of variation in terms of how you prove competence and skill.
